For most of my life, I struggled with my weight.
Not casually. Not “I gained ten pounds over the holidays” kind of struggle.
I mean the kind of struggle where weight feels like it is always part of the conversation. Always in the back of your mind. Always affecting what you wear, how you feel, how you show up, and how much energy you have left to give everyone else.
And for years, I did what so many people do.
I blamed myself.
I thought if I just had more discipline, if I just tried harder, if I just ate less, if I just pushed through, then maybe I would finally become the person I wanted to be.
But after losing 90 pounds and spending years working with patients, I can tell you this with confidence:
For many people, weight is not a character flaw.
It is physiology.
That does not mean choices do not matter. They absolutely do. But choices are much harder when your biology is screaming at you all day long.
When blood sugar is unstable, insulin is high, inflammation is present, sleep is poor, stress is constant, and hormones are out of balance, the body is not in fat-burning mode.
It is in survival mode.
And survival mode does not care about your summer vacation, your family pictures, or the jeans sitting in your closet.
Survival mode says, “Store. Protect. Preserve.”
That is why GLP-1 therapy has changed the conversation around weight loss.
What GLP-1 Actually Does
GLP-1 is a hormone your body naturally makes. It helps regulate appetite, blood sugar, insulin response, and fullness.
GLP-1 medications work by supporting that pathway more consistently.
Patients often describe it as the “food noise” finally quieting down.
That constant mental chatter around food starts to fade:
“What am I eating next?”
“Why am I still hungry?”
“Why can’t I stop craving sugar?”
“Why do I feel out of control at night?”
For many people, GLP-1 creates enough quiet in the system that they can finally make the choices they have been trying to make for years.
Not because they suddenly became better people.
Because their biology finally stopped fighting them.
Benefits Beyond Weight Loss
Weight loss is often the most visible result, but it is not the only benefit.
GLP-1 therapy may support:
- Better blood sugar regulation
- Improved insulin sensitivity
- Reduced cravings
- Decreased appetite
- Reduction in visceral belly fat
- Improved inflammatory markers
- Better cardiovascular risk factors
- Improved energy stability
- Better control around emotional eating
- Reduced late-night snacking
- Improved confidence and mobility
For patients with metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance, PCOS patterns, perimenopause-related weight gain, or long-standing obesity, this can be life-changing.
But here is where I want to be very clear.
GLP-1 is not magic.
It is a tool.
And like any tool, it works best when it is used correctly.
Where Many Clinics Get It Wrong
The biggest mistake I see is treating GLP-1 like a stand-alone solution.
A patient gets a prescription, loses weight, eats very little, loses muscle, comes off the medication, and then the weight starts creeping back.
That is not true metabolic restoration.
That is medically assisted restriction.
At Essential Infusions Plus, that is not the goal.
My goal is not just to help you weigh less.
My goal is to help your body function better.
That means we talk about:
- Protein intake
- Muscle preservation
- Strength training
- Bowel health
- Hydration
- Nutrient depletion
- Hormones
- Thyroid function
- Sleep
- Stress
- Long-term maintenance
Because the number on the scale is only one piece of the story.
A person can lose weight and still be metabolically unhealthy if they lose muscle, under-eat, become nutrient depleted, or never address the underlying issue.
Why Muscle Matters So Much
One of the biggest things I teach patients is this:
We are not just chasing weight loss.
We are protecting muscle.
Muscle is one of the most important metabolic organs in the body. It helps regulate blood sugar, supports insulin sensitivity, improves strength, protects bones, supports hormones, and helps you age better.
So when someone starts GLP-1, we want to make sure they are not just shrinking.
We want them rebuilding.
That means adequate protein, resistance training, and sometimes targeted support like amino acids, peptides, hormone optimization, and IV nutrients.
This is where functional medicine and weight loss need to meet.
My Personal Perspective
I know what it feels like to be trapped in a body that feels like it will not cooperate.
I know what it feels like to avoid pictures.
I know what it feels like to try everything and wonder why it works for everyone else but not for you.
And I also know what it feels like to finally understand the body instead of hating it.
Losing 90 pounds changed my life, but more than that, it changed my compassion for people who are still in the struggle.
That is why I do not shame patients.
I educate them.
Because when you understand what your body is doing, you can stop fighting it and start working with it.
A Faith-Based Perspective on Weight and Healing
I believe our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made.
But I also believe many people are walking around exhausted, inflamed, overfed but undernourished, hormonally depleted, and spiritually discouraged.
Caring for your body is not vanity.
It is stewardship.
It is saying, “Lord, I want the energy, clarity, and strength to do what You have called me to do.”
That may mean losing weight.
But it also may mean sleeping better, moving without pain, thinking clearly, having energy for your family, and not feeling controlled by cravings.
That is the bigger picture.
Who May Benefit from a GLP-1 Program?
GLP-1 may be worth discussing if you struggle with:
- Weight that will not move despite effort
- Insulin resistance
- Prediabetes or blood sugar instability
- PCOS-type symptoms
- Perimenopause or menopause weight gain
- Constant cravings
- Emotional eating
- Belly fat
- Fatigue after meals
- A history of yo-yo dieting
The goal is not to put everyone on medication.
The goal is to identify what your body needs.
For some, GLP-1 is the missing tool.
For others, hormones, thyroid, gut health, inflammation, or stress may be the bigger starting point.
That is why individualized care matters.
Final Thought
If you have spent years blaming yourself for your weight, I want you to hear this:
You are not broken.
Your body is communicating.
And when we listen to the message instead of judging the symptom, healing becomes possible.
At Essential Infusions Plus, we help patients approach weight loss through a functional, metabolic, and faith-filled lens—because you deserve more than another diet.
You deserve a plan that finally makes sense.
