Unlock the Healing Powers of Red Light Therapy

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is a natural, non-invasive, science-backed treatment with numerous health and well-being benefits, such as treating mitochondrial dysfunction, boosting collagen production, increasing circulation, reducing inflammation, alleviating joint and back pain, aiding exercise recovery, and even decreasing the signs of aging.

Red light therapy is a form of photobiomodulation, which utilizes low-level light in the red and near-infrared spectrum to stimulate healing and improve wellness. Treatment is typically done with LED (Light-Emitting Diode) panels.

This technology is sometimes referred to by other names, such as NIR light therapy, infrared therapy, Low-level light therapy, or LED therapy. It should be noted that this is different from low-level laser therapy.

How Red Light Therapy Works

For millennia, natural sunlight or heliotherapy has been used to heal, though the exact method by which it did so was not understood. Fast-forward to today and researchers have determined that wavelengths of light have a variety of therapeutic effects on the human body.

Red light wavelength ranges from 620 to 750 nanometers (nm), while near-infrared (NIR) ranges from 780 to 1200 nm. Through extended research, it has been concluded that the greatest amount of healing occurs in humans when exposed to red light within the range of 630 to 660 nm, and NIR light between 810 and 850 nm, also known as the “therapeutic window.”

Light absorption is necessary for it to have beneficial effects on the body. The epidermis is thick enough to stop most blue and green light from entering, though it remains an effective acne treatment. Ultraviolet light, on the other hand, has been linked to skin cancer if overexposed, so requires caution. Red/near-infrared light, however, carries no risk and offers few to no side effects with regular use, making it a great option for treating skin conditions and promoting skin rejuvenation.

Benefits of Red Light Therapy

The growing popularity of red light therapy in recent years may be attributed to its potential to heal on a cellular level, thereby addressing the causes of many chronic illnesses. This kind of treatment does this by improving four key mechanisms, such as restoring mitochondrial function, enhancing collagen production, promoting better circulation, and reducing inflammation.

Many other benefits include:

  • Enhanced muscular healing and faster recovery time
  • Improved recovery from strokes of varying degrees of severity
  • Reduced neurological damage from traumatic brain injuries
  • Increased wellness for psychiatric disorders, such as depression and anxiety
  • Enhanced recovery and improved healing after plastic surgery
  • Accelerated healing and decreased risk of infection
  • Treatment for erectile dysfunction
  • Uplift of endorphins, which are natural pain relievers
  • Suitable for pet care
  • Therapy for cold sores
  • Increased ocular health
  • Increased bone repair and growth
  • Accelerated return to physical activity after injury
  • Therapy for Lyme disease
  • Decreased risk of nail fungus
